About Manchester Metropolitan University
Manchester Metropolitan University is a public university in Manchester, England. It traces to the Manchester Mechanics' Institute of 1824 and the Manchester School of Art of 1838; those colleges and later municipal institutions became Manchester Polytechnic, which gained university status in 1992. It is a large urban university organized by faculties, not a collegiate or land-grant foundation.
Academic work sits in faculties of business and law, arts and humanities, health and education, and science and engineering. Manchester School of Art remains the historic center for fine art, design and fashion. Other graduate concentrations include education, sport and exercise science, business, and health professions. Research groups work on aging, education policy, and materials and design.
The university enrolls about 40,000 students, a large UK total, with a substantial international minority from many countries. Academic staff number in the thousands. Alumni of the university and the former polytechnic include comedian Steve Coogan and graphic designer Peter Saville. International students come especially from East Asia, South Asia and Europe.
Graduate study is mainly taught master's degrees and PhDs by research supervision on a two-semester year. Studentships follow standard UK research-council and university patterns. Students work on inner-city campuses around All Saints and Birley Fields in central Manchester. Master's dissertations typically run through the summer.
