It began as a School of Medicine and Surgery in 1834, and Armstrong College followed for the physical sciences in 1871. Both later became King's College, part of the federal University of Durham. King's College became the independent University of Newcastle upon Tyne in 1963. The university also runs a medical campus in Johor, Malaysia, and has a presence in Singapore.

The university has about 28,000 students, and roughly a quarter are postgraduates. International students come from more than 130 countries. The alumni include the actor Rowan Atkinson, who studied electrical engineering, the musician Bryan Ferry, who studied fine art, and the broadcaster Kate Adie.
