About ROYAL ACADEMY OF MUSIC

The Royal Academy of Music is a conservatoire in London, founded in 1822 by Lord Burghersh (John Fane, 11th Earl of Westmorland) to train professional musicians. Since 1999 it has been a constituent college of the University of London, awarding degrees within that federal system. Its Marylebone Road building stands beside Regent's Park. The Academy is a specialist music college with a conservatoire structure of principal-study teachers, not a collegiate multi-faculty university.

Departments cover keyboard, strings, woodwind, brass, percussion, voice, opera, composition, conducting, jazz, and musical theatre, plus research in performance practice. The Academy is known for orchestral training, opera, and composition. Graduate students work in the Duke's Hall, the opera theatre, the museum of instruments, and through placements with London orchestras and companies.

Enrollment is about 800 students, more than half of them from outside the United Kingdom and drawn from dozens of countries. The teaching staff numbers in the hundreds when visiting professors are included, most of them active performers. Alumni include singer-songwriter Elton John, conductor Simon Rattle, and composer Harrison Birtwistle, along with principals in British orchestras.

Graduate study includes master's degrees in performance and composition and research degrees (MPhil and Ph.D.) through the University of London. The model is one-to-one tuition, chamber music, and assessed recitals rather than laboratory science. The year follows the British autumn-to-summer calendar. Scholarships and bursaries are a normal part of support. Students live across London and spend the working day on the Marylebone campus, inside the city's concert and opera economy.

In the Grad School Navigator directory, ROYAL ACADEMY OF MUSIC lists 1 master's program, in music.
