About Sotheby's Institute Of Art

Sotheby's Institute of Art is a specialist postgraduate school of art business founded in London in 1969 by the auction house Sotheby's. It is based in Bloomsbury and also teaches in New York. It trains people for the art market, galleries, and museums rather than for studio practice.

The curriculum centers on master's degrees in art business, contemporary art, and fine and decorative art and design, with object-based teaching, market analysis, and professional projects. Instruction draws on auction, gallery, and museum practice.

The student body is small, in the hundreds across campuses, almost entirely postgraduate, and largely international. Faculty mix art historians with practitioners from the trade.

Graduate study is a taught master's model with a dissertation or professional project. London students work in a city of auction rooms, commercial galleries, and national collections, which remains the Institute's original setting.

In the Grad School Navigator directory, Sotheby's Institute Of Art lists 3 graduate programs across 3 subjects, all of them master's programs, with the widest choice in art and business & management.
