About University of Brighton
The University of Brighton is a public university on the Sussex coast of England, granted university title in 1992 after a history as the Brighton School of Art from 1859 and later Brighton Polytechnic. Teaching is spread across Brighton and Eastbourne, with the Grand Parade site in central Brighton for art and design and larger campuses at Moulsecoomb and Falmer on the city's northern edge, beside the University of Sussex.
Schools cover art and media, architecture and design, applied sciences, business and law, education, sport and health sciences, and humanities. Graduate strengths sit in art and design practice, architecture, sport and exercise science, health professions, and education. A doctoral college supports practice-based PhD routes in art, and health students use National Health Service placements across Sussex.
Enrollment is about 18,000 to 21,000 students, including a substantial share of international students from many countries, especially on art, design, and business master's courses. Staff number in the low thousands. Alumni include musician Norman Cook, who studied at Brighton Polytechnic, and graduates in art, design, teaching, and the health professions.
Graduate awards are mainly MA, MSc, and PhD degrees, including professional doctorates in education and health. Taught master's are coursework and project based; research degrees use a supervisor team. The academic year follows the United Kingdom autumn and spring pattern. Funding includes UK Research and Innovation studentships, university bursaries, and teaching assistantships. Students live in Brighton and Hove, with rental housing around Moulsecoomb and the seafront.
