About University of East Anglia

The University of East Anglia is a public research university in Norwich, in eastern England. It was founded in 1963 as one of the United Kingdom's plate-glass universities and opened on a parkland campus west of the city beside the River Yare. It grew around interdisciplinary schools rather than a collegiate system. The site is part of Norwich Research Park, which also houses independent scientific institutes.

Four faculties cover Arts and Humanities, Medicine and Health Sciences, Science, and Social Sciences. UEA is best known for creative writing, environmental sciences and climate research, and selected health and social-science fields. The Creative Writing Course began in 1970. The Climatic Research Unit (1972) and the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research are based here, with links to the John Innes Centre and the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital.

About 18,000 students enroll, with a large taught-postgraduate population; international students make up around a quarter of enrollment and come from more than 100 countries. Alumni include novelist Kazuo Ishiguro, a Nobel laureate in literature, novelist Ian McEwan, and cell biologist Paul Nurse, a Nobel laureate in physiology or medicine who completed his doctorate here.

Graduate study is built on taught master's degrees (MA, MSc, MRes), the MPhil, and the PhD, plus medicine and health professional routes. Humanities master's programs are seminar- or workshop-based; science doctorates follow laboratory supervision. The year follows the UK autumn-to-summer pattern. Research-council and university studentships support many research students. The campus is residential and self-contained, with Norwich a short bus ride away.

In the Grad School Navigator directory, University of East Anglia lists 137 graduate programs across 36 subjects: 106 master's programs and 30 doctoral programs, with the widest choice in economics, communication, media & journalism and health & medical sciences. University of East Anglia holds rank 382 in the GSN Overall University Ranking.
