About University of Exeter
The University of Exeter is a public research university in Exeter, Devon, in southwest England. It received its royal charter in 1955, succeeding the University College of the South West and older city colleges that date from the nineteenth century. It is a multi-campus institution rather than a collegiate one: the main Streatham campus and nearby St Luke's campus sit in Exeter, and a Penryn campus in Cornwall is shared with Falmouth University.
Teaching and research are grouped into three faculties covering environment, science and economy; humanities, arts and social sciences; and health and life sciences. Climate and environmental science are central, through the Environment and Sustainability Institute at Penryn and through proximity to the Met Office in Exeter. The Business School and Medical School, together with English, history, and Arab and Islamic studies, also draw many graduate students. Clinical and biomedical work is tied to NHS hospitals in Devon and Cornwall.
Exeter enrolls about 32,000 students, including a large taught-postgraduate population and a smaller doctoral cohort. International students make up more than a quarter of enrollment and come from more than 140 countries. Notable alumni include novelist J.K. Rowling, musician Thom Yorke, and former chancellor of the exchequer Sajid Javid.
Graduate study is built on taught master's degrees, MRes and MPhil awards, and PhD supervision, often inside UK doctoral training partnerships. The year follows the standard three-term British calendar. Research students are typically supported by research-council studentships, university scholarships, and faculty awards. Daily life is split between a compact cathedral city and, for Cornwall-based students, a smaller campus on the Fal estuary.
In the Grad School Navigator directory, University of Exeter lists 247 graduate programs across 39 subjects: 178 master's programs and 67 doctoral programs, with the widest choice in area studies, history and education. University of Exeter holds rank 133 in the GSN Overall University Ranking.
