About University of Liverpool
The University of Liverpool is a public research university in northwest England and a founding member of the Russell Group. It opened in 1881 as University College Liverpool and joined the federal Victoria University in 1884. It received its own royal charter in 1903. Its Victoria Building inspired the term red brick university. In 2006 it co-founded Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University in Suzhou, China, with Xi'an Jiaotong University.
Liverpool has three faculties: Health and Life Sciences; Humanities and Social Sciences; and Science and Engineering. It founded one of the first university veterinary schools in the UK in 1904, and it has long been known for infectious disease, tropical medicine, veterinary science, materials chemistry and Egyptology. Research centers include the Materials Innovation Factory, the Institute of Infection, Veterinary and Ecological Sciences and the University of Liverpool Management School. The veterinary teaching campus is at Leahurst on the Wirral.
The university has about 30,000 students, and international students come from more than 130 countries. Nine Nobel laureates are associated with the university. They include Ronald Ross, who described malaria transmission by mosquitoes, and James Chadwick and Joseph Rotblat, both physicists who worked there. Carol Ann Duffy, a former UK Poet Laureate, is an alumna.
Graduate study includes one-year taught MSc, MA and MRes degrees and three- to four-year PhDs. Many PhDs are funded through UKRI doctoral training partnerships and centers for doctoral training. The university also runs online master's programs for working professionals. The year runs on two semesters. Doctoral funding comes from research councils, faculty studentships and industry partners. The main campus sits on the edge of Liverpool city center, near the Knowledge Quarter and the university's hospital partners.
