About University of Sheffield
The University of Sheffield is a public civic research university in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, granted a royal charter in 1905. It grew from the Sheffield School of Medicine (1828), Firth College (1879) and the Sheffield Technical School, the red-brick pattern of a northern industrial city university. The main campus sits between the city center and Weston Park.
Five faculties cover arts and humanities, engineering, health, science and social sciences. Engineering is closely tied to the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre, a partnership with Boeing and other manufacturers. The Medical School and teaching hospitals serve clinical graduate training. The Insigneo Institute for in silico medicine and long-standing materials and glass research are laboratory concentrations for science and engineering students.
About 30,000 students study at Sheffield, including a large international postgraduate taught population from more than 140 countries. Nobel laureate Sir Harry Kroto, who shared the prize for the discovery of fullerenes, was a Sheffield graduate and later a member of staff. Alumni also include astronaut Helen Sharman and athlete Jessica Ennis-Hill.
Taught MA and MSc degrees, MRes awards, and PhD and professional doctorates are the main graduate routes. Research students work with supervisors toward a thesis, often inside doctoral training centers in engineering and energy. The year is semester-based. Scholarships and research-council studentships are the core funding routes. The campus is walkable into a post-industrial city with a large steel and advanced-manufacturing economy.
