About University of Strathclyde
The University of Strathclyde is a public research university in central Glasgow, Scotland. It traces to Anderson's Institution, founded in 1796 by John Anderson, and received its royal charter in 1964. Its motto, the place of useful learning, still describes a technical and professional university rather than a collegiate or ancient Scottish university.
Four faculties cover Engineering, Science, Humanities and Social Sciences, and Strathclyde Business School. The university is known for engineering, pharmacy, physics, and business. The Technology and Innovation Centre, the Strathclyde Institute of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences, and related engineering laboratories are the sites graduate students in those fields use.
About 23,000 students enroll. International students are a large share, often more than a quarter of the student body, from more than 100 countries, including substantial cohorts from China, India, and the Middle East. Academic staff number about 1,500. Alumni include inventor John Logie Baird, who studied at the predecessor technical college, and politician John Reid.
Graduate degrees include taught MSc programs, research MPhil and PhD degrees, and professional programs in business and engineering. Taught master's are coursework-heavy; doctoral study is supervision-led with some formal training. The academic year follows the Scottish two-semester pattern. Doctoral students are typically funded by UK research councils, university studentships, or industry. The John Anderson Campus is in central Glasgow, so graduate life is urban.
In the Grad School Navigator directory, University of Strathclyde lists 4 graduate programs across 4 subjects: 2 master's programs and 2 doctoral programs, with the widest choice in finance & financial economics, mathematics and operations research & management science. University of Strathclyde holds rank 301 in the GSN Overall University Ranking.
