About University of Surrey

The University of Surrey is a public research university in Guildford, Surrey, England. It received its royal charter in 1966 after relocating from Battersea Polytechnic Institute, which opened in London in 1891. The main Stag Hill campus stands beside Guildford Cathedral. Surrey developed as a technological university and later added health sciences, veterinary medicine, and hospitality.

Faculties cover engineering and physical sciences, health and medical sciences, and arts and social sciences. Named units that matter for graduate students include the Surrey Space Centre, the 5G/6G Innovation Centre, the School of Veterinary Medicine, and the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management. A research park adjoins the campus.

Enrollment is about 16,000 students, with international students often around a third of the total and drawn from more than 100 countries. Academic and research staff number in the thousands. Alumni work in satellite engineering, telecom, hospitality, and the UK health sector; engineers from the university's Surrey Satellite Technology spinout form a distinct professional network.

Graduate degrees are mainly one-year taught master's (MSc, MA, MBA) and the PhD. Engineering and physical-science doctorates are laboratory research under a supervisor; professional master's in hospitality and health are coursework-led. The calendar follows UK terms. Doctoral studentships and industry partnerships are common in electronic engineering and space. Guildford is a market town southwest of London, and many students live on Stag Hill or commute from the capital.
