About University of the Arts London

University of the Arts London is a specialist public arts university created in 2004 by federating older London art and design colleges. Its six colleges—Camberwell College of Arts, Central Saint Martins, Chelsea College of Arts, London College of Communication, London College of Fashion, and Wimbledon College of Arts—keep separate sites and identities across the city. The defining structure is this federal college system, not a single campus or a full-spectrum university.

Graduate work concentrates in fine art, fashion, graphic and product design, film and media, journalism, and theatre. Central Saint Martins and London College of Fashion draw many graduate students in fashion and art; London College of Communication houses media and design master's degrees. Research degrees sit in a university-wide graduate school, with studios, workshops, and archives rather than science laboratories.

Enrollment is about 22,000 students, with a high international share—often around half—from more than 100 countries. Most students are in undergraduate or taught master's programs; the research-degree cohort is small. Alumni include fashion designers Alexander McQueen, John Galliano, and Stella McCartney, all associated with Central Saint Martins.

Taught master's degrees (M.A., M.Sc., and some business-of-fashion tracks) and a smaller M.Phil./Ph.D. route are the main graduate awards. Supervision is studio- and project-based, with critiques rather than a lecture-plus-lab model. Terms follow the U.K. academic year. Scholarships exist, but many students fund studio programs themselves. Daily life is spread across London, from King's Cross to south and west London college sites.

In the Grad School Navigator directory, University of the Arts London lists 32 graduate programs across 9 subjects: 31 master's programs and 1 doctoral program, with the widest choice in business & management, film & filmmaking and marketing.
