About wellcome sanger institute
The Wellcome Sanger Institute is a genome research institute on the Wellcome Genome Campus at Hinxton, south of Cambridge, England. It was founded in 1992 as the Sanger Centre to sequence DNA for the Human Genome Project and is named for biochemist Frederick Sanger, a two-time Nobel laureate in chemistry. It is a Wellcome-funded research institute, not a degree-granting university in its own right.
Work is organized into programs in cellular genetics, human genetics, cancer, aging, parasites and microbes, and computational genomics. Core facilities include large-scale sequencing, cellular models, and mouse genetics. Doctoral students sit in these faculty-led groups rather than in conventional academic departments.
The campus employs more than 1,000 staff, including group leaders, postdoctoral scientists, and a small annual cohort of Ph.D. students. Alumni of the doctoral program work in academic genomics, biotechnology, and public-health sequencing networks.
Doctoral training is typically a four-year Ph.D. registered with the University of Cambridge or another partner university, combining a lab placement with a dissertation. There is no large taught master's college on site. Hinxton is a purpose-built science campus in South Cambridgeshire; students travel to Cambridge for college affiliation, seminars, and city life.
In the Grad School Navigator directory, wellcome sanger institute lists 1 doctoral program, in biology.
