About Hong Kong Shue Yan University

Hong Kong Shue Yan University is a private university on Braemar Hill in North Point, Hong Kong. Henry H. L. Hu and Chung Chi-yung founded it in 1971 as Hong Kong Shue Yan College; it received university title in 2006 as the first private university in Hong Kong. It is a small teaching university with a liberal-arts and social-sciences character rather than a comprehensive research campus.

Faculties cover arts, social sciences, commerce, and law. The university is known for journalism, counseling, Chinese and English, history, and related social-science fields. Graduate work is concentrated in a limited set of research degrees rather than a full professional-school array.

Enrollment is about 5,000 students, mostly undergraduates, with a smaller graduate population. Most students are from Hong Kong, with some from mainland China and elsewhere in Asia. The faculty is modest in size. Alumni work in Hong Kong media, social services, education, and business.

Doctoral and other research degrees are the graduate programs most visible in the arts and social sciences. Supervision follows a small-department model. The academic year uses Hong Kong's semester calendar. Students study on a hillside urban campus above North Point, with tram and bus links to the rest of Hong Kong Island.

In the Grad School Navigator directory, Hong Kong Shue Yan University lists 3 graduate programs in psychology and languages & linguistics, all of them doctoral programs.
