About Lingnan University
Lingnan University is a public liberal arts university in Tuen Mun, in the New Territories of Hong Kong. It traces its origin to 1888 in Guangzhou, where it operated as a Christian college, and was re-established in Hong Kong, gaining university title in 1999. Its defining fact is small-scale undergraduate liberal arts education with a residential campus, rather than a full suite of professional schools.
Three faculties—Arts, Business, and Social Sciences—cover the curriculum, with graduate work in the humanities, social sciences, and business. Strengths for graduate students include Chinese literature and history, cultural studies, economics and policy, and business. Research centers attached to the faculties support MPhil and PhD students; there is no medical school, law school, or engineering faculty.
The student body is on the order of 6,000, mostly undergraduates, with a smaller graduate cohort of MPhil, PhD, and taught master’s students. International and mainland students form a visible minority on a campus that remains majority local. Faculty numbers are in the low hundreds, consistent with a liberal arts scale. Alumni are concentrated in Hong Kong education, public administration, and business rather than in a short list of globally famous names.
Graduate study combines research degrees (MPhil and PhD) with taught master’s, including expanding professional master’s in business and social sciences. Research students work with a supervisor in a small-department model; taught programs are coursework-heavy. The year follows Hong Kong’s semester calendar. Funding for research postgraduates typically includes studentships. Campus life is residential in Tuen Mun, a new-town setting with access to the Light Rail and MTR toward Kowloon.
In the Grad School Navigator directory, Lingnan University lists 15 graduate programs across 9 subjects: 13 master's programs and 2 doctoral programs, with the widest choice in education, languages & linguistics and psychology.
