Southern University of Science and Technology & HongKong University of Science and Technology

The pairing of the Southern University of Science and Technology and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology is a cross-border graduate arrangement rather than a single chartered university. SUSTech was established in Shenzhen in 2010 as a municipal research university. HKUST opened at Clear Water Bay in 1991. Joint doctoral training splits supervision and laboratory time between the Pearl River Delta and Hong Kong.

HKUST is organized in schools of science, engineering, business, and humanities and social science. SUSTech is organized in colleges of science, engineering, life and health sciences, medicine, and business. Joint work concentrates on science and engineering, including microelectronics, materials, and data-intensive fields, and it uses laboratories on both campuses.

SUSTech enrolls more than 10,000 students. HKUST enrolls about 17,000, with a large postgraduate share and a high proportion of students from outside Hong Kong. Faculty at both universities include academy members and industrial collaborators in the Greater Bay Area. Alumni of the two universities work in research laboratories, universities, and technology firms in southern China and overseas.

The partnership is known for the PhD, with co-supervision, qualifying coursework, and a research thesis. Students typically reside for periods in Shenzhen and at Clear Water Bay. Support is usually a research studentship tied to a host group. Daily life alternates between a new research campus in Shenzhen and HKUST's hillside campus above Port Shelter, with frequent travel across the boundary.
