About The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen

The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen is a research university in Longgang District, Shenzhen, Guangdong, opened in 2014 by agreement between The Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Shenzhen Municipal Government. It is a legally separate Chinese institution that adopted CUHK’s collegiate system and uses English as the main language of instruction. From a first intake of a few hundred students it has grown into a collegiate campus planned toward more than 10,000 students.

Work is organized in schools of Management and Economics, Science and Engineering, Humanities and Social Science, Life and Health Sciences, Data Science, Medicine, and Music, with a graduate school for research and taught postgraduate degrees. Strengths include economics and finance, computer and data science, materials and biomedical engineering, and translation. Research sits in school laboratories and in units such as the Shenzhen Research Institute of Big Data, with medical facilities expanding alongside the School of Medicine.

Enrollment is about 9,000 students, still majority undergraduate, with a growing graduate cohort from mainland China, Hong Kong, and several dozen other countries. Faculty are hired internationally, and some hold joint ties with CUHK in Hong Kong. The Shenzhen alumni body is still forming given the campus’s age.

Graduate study follows CUHK patterns: supervisor-led MPhil and PhD programs and taught master’s degrees in business, data science and related fields. The calendar tracks CUHK’s terms. Support combines university studentships, Shenzhen and Guangdong scholarships, and faculty grants. Students live in colleges on a purpose-built campus in northern Shenzhen, near the city’s technology firms and high-speed rail toward Hong Kong.

In the Grad School Navigator directory, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen lists 16 graduate programs across 13 subjects: 11 master's programs and 5 doctoral programs, with the widest choice in computer science, data science & business analytics and accounting.
