About The Education University of Hong Kong
The Education University of Hong Kong is a public university in Tai Po, Hong Kong, devoted primarily to teacher education and related social sciences. It was formed as the Hong Kong Institute of Education in 1994 by merging colleges of education with nineteenth-century roots, and it received university title in 2016. Its defining structure is a specialist education university rather than a comprehensive campus.
Organization centers on faculties of education, humanities, and social sciences, with graduate work in curriculum, language education, educational leadership, and psychology. Facilities include teaching laboratories, language centers, and partner schools used for practicum. Applied research sits in education and social-science institutes rather than in medicine or engineering.
Enrollment is about 8,500 students, a mix of education undergraduates, a large taught-postgraduate population of working teachers, and a smaller research-degree group. Students come mainly from Hong Kong, with mainland and overseas students in selected programs. Faculty are education specialists and social scientists. Alumni populate Hong Kong’s schools, the Education Bureau, and teacher-training posts in the region.
Graduate degrees include taught master’s in education, the Doctor of Education, and a smaller PhD stream. Taught programs mix coursework and practicum; EdD and PhD work is supervised research, often part-time for serving teachers. The calendar follows Hong Kong semesters, with summer institutes for in-service students. Full-time research students typically hold studentships. Daily life is on the Tai Po campus in the northern New Territories, with residences and MTR access.
