The Hong Kong Polytechnic University

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University is a public university in Hung Hom, Kowloon, Hong Kong. It began in 1937 as the Government Trade School, became the Hong Kong Polytechnic in 1972, and received university status in 1994. It remains an application-oriented university with large professional faculties rather than a collegiate arts college.

Faculties and schools include business, construction and environment, design, engineering, health and social sciences, humanities, hotel and tourism management, and science. The School of Design and the School of Hotel and Tourism Management, which operates the teaching hotel Hotel ICON, are distinctive for graduate students. Construction, rehabilitation sciences, textiles, and engineering carry large research and taught-postgraduate loads.

About 26,000 students enroll, including a large taught-postgraduate population and a smaller research-student cohort. Non-local students, especially from mainland China, are a substantial share of master's programs. Faculty number about 1,200. Alumni are concentrated in Hong Kong's design, construction, hospitality, and engineering professions.

Graduate study emphasizes taught master's (MSc, MA) alongside MPhil and Ph.D. research degrees. Many programs are professionally accredited and coursework-based; research students work in faculty laboratories and institutes. The academic year is semester-based. Research studentships support doctoral candidates. The Hung Hom campus sits beside Victoria Harbour and the Hung Hom transport hub, so graduate students typically live in Kowloon rather than on a suburban hillside campus.
