About University College Cork
University College Cork is a constituent university of the National University of Ireland, in Cork. It opened in 1845 as Queen's College Cork and took its present name in 1908 when the National University of Ireland was formed. The main campus sits beside the River Lee near the city center, on the site of a former monastery. Teaching and research run through four colleges in a comprehensive public university, not a collegiate federation.
The colleges cover arts, Celtic studies and social sciences; business and law; medicine and health; and science, engineering and food science. Graduate work is associated with food science and nutrition, medicine, Irish studies, and photonics. The Tyndall National Institute on campus is Ireland's national research center for information and communications technology, microelectronics, and photonics. Cork University Hospital supports clinical training, and APC Microbiome Ireland draws science students.
UCC enrolls about 24,000 students, of whom roughly a quarter are postgraduates. International students make up about one fifth of the student body and come from more than 100 countries. George Boole was the first professor of mathematics at the college. Alumni include writer Frank O'Connor and former Irish prime minister Jack Lynch.
Graduate study follows the Irish pattern of taught master's degrees, research master's, and PhDs by supervised research, with some professional doctorates in health. The academic year runs on two semesters from September. Funding commonly includes Irish Research Council awards and Science Foundation Ireland grants. Cork is Ireland's second-largest city, and students live on campus and in the surrounding neighborhoods.
