About Technion - Israel Institute of Technology

The Technion – Israel Institute of Technology is a public research university in Haifa, Israel. It was founded in 1912 and began instruction in 1924, the first university in what became the State of Israel. Its defining structure is that of a technical institute: a hillside campus known as Technion City on Mount Carmel, devoted to engineering, science, architecture, and medicine.

About 18 faculties cover the engineering branches, the exact sciences, architecture and town planning, computer science, and medicine through the Rappaport Faculty of Medicine, which works with Haifa hospitals. The institute is best known for electrical engineering, computer science, aerospace and civil engineering, and chemistry. Graduate students use faculty laboratories, nanotechnology facilities, and medical-research space on the Haifa campus.

Enrollment is about 14,000 students, with a large graduate share. International students are a growing minority in English-taught master's and PhD tracks. Faculty include three Nobel laureates in chemistry: Avram Hershko, Aaron Ciechanover, and Dan Shechtman. Alumni include communications engineer Andrew Viterbi and computer scientist Shafi Goldwasser, as well as founders of many Israeli technology companies.

Graduate study is known for the MSc and PhD by research, with required coursework and a thesis, and for selected international master's programs taught in English. The calendar is a two-semester year. Support commonly takes the form of graduate research scholarships and teaching duties. Students live on a self-contained campus above Haifa, with dormitories and laboratories and a short descent to the city on the Mediterranean.
