About Weizmann Institute of Science

The Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, Israel, opened in 1934 as the Daniel Sieff Research Institute and was renamed in 1949 for chemist Chaim Weizmann, later Israel's first president. It is a graduate-only research institute in the natural sciences, with no undergraduate colleges.

Research is organized in biology, biochemistry, chemistry, physics, and mathematics and computer science, plus centers in nanotechnology, energy, and brain science. The Feinberg Graduate School is the teaching arm. Laboratories occupy a campus in Rehovot, south of Tel Aviv.

The student body is about 1,000 master's and doctoral students, a high fraction of them international. Scientific staff includes several hundred principal investigators. Crystallographer Ada Yonath, a Weizmann faculty member, received the 2009 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

Study is research-based: a thesis master's and a PhD under a principal investigator, with limited coursework and English as the working language. Fellowships support students. The campus is self-contained, with housing that keeps graduate life close to the labs.

In the Grad School Navigator directory, Weizmann Institute of Science lists 3 graduate programs in physics and computer science: 2 master's programs and 1 doctoral program.
