About International Centre for Theoretical Physics

The Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics in Trieste, Italy, was founded in 1964 by Abdus Salam with the International Atomic Energy Agency, UNESCO, and the Italian government. It occupies a campus at Miramare on the Adriatic, next to the University of Trieste and the International School for Advanced Studies (SISSA).

Research sections cover high-energy physics, condensed matter, mathematics, Earth system physics, and quantitative life sciences. Training includes the Pre-PhD Diploma Programme, joint master's degrees with SISSA and the University of Trieste, and visitor and workshop programs for scientists from developing countries.

A few hundred staff, postdocs, Diploma students, and visitors are on site at a time, from more than 100 countries. Founder Abdus Salam received the Nobel Prize in Physics; many alumni hold faculty posts in Asia, Africa, and Latin America.

The Diploma and joint master's combine coursework with research under staff supervision; many students continue to doctoral programs elsewhere. Fellowships are the standard support. Students live in Trieste, a compact port city, with housing near the Miramare campus.

In the Grad School Navigator directory, International Centre for Theoretical Physics lists 1 master's program, in physics.
