About University of Parma
The University of Parma is a public university in Parma, in Italy's Emilia-Romagna region. A studium existed in the Middle Ages; a papal university was established in 1412, and the modern state university took shape in the nineteenth century. It is a comprehensive Italian university with a strong identity in food, veterinary, and medical sciences, reflecting the city's food industries.
Departments cover medicine and surgery, veterinary science, food and drug sciences, engineering, economics, law, and the humanities. The food-science and veterinary faculties are closely tied to the local dairy and meat sectors. Clinical training uses the university hospital in Parma. A science campus south of the historic center holds laboratories for chemistry, engineering, and the life sciences.
About 30,000 students enroll, including graduate and professional students and an international minority, mainly from Europe and Asia. Faculty number in the hundreds. Alumni work in the Italian food industry, veterinary practice, medicine, and regional public administration.
Graduate programs include the laurea magistrale, medical and veterinary degrees, and the Ph.D., combining taught courses with thesis supervision. Specialization schools train physicians. The year typically begins in the autumn. Students live in Parma, a mid-size city in the Po Valley, splitting time between downtown lecture halls and the southern science area.
