About University of Trento

The University of Trento is a public research university in Trento, in Italy's Trentino region. Founded in 1962 as a higher institute of social sciences, it became a full university in 1982 and grew from a sociology core into science, engineering, law, and the humanities. Teaching and research are split between the city of Trento and Rovereto. It operates as a departmental university closely linked to the provincial research system, including the Bruno Kessler Foundation.

Departments cover sociology and social research, economics and management, law, humanities, psychology and cognitive science, physics, mathematics, civil and industrial engineering, information engineering and computer science, and cellular and computational biology. Graduate students in mind and brain sciences work at CIMeC in Rovereto. Strengths for graduate work include sociology, information and communication technology, cognitive neuroscience, and physics.

About 16,000 students are enrolled, with several thousand in master's and doctoral programs. International students are a noticeable share, especially in English-taught science degrees, and come from Europe and farther afield. Academic staff number about 600. Alumni include Italian sociologists, public administrators, and researchers in ICT.

Graduate degrees are the two-year laurea magistrale and the research doctorate (dottorato di ricerca), with English-taught master's in computer science, cognitive science, and physics. Doctoral work is supervision-led in departmental schools on a two-semester calendar. Research groups commonly support students through scholarships and assistantships. Trento is a compact Alpine city; graduate life mixes the historic center with hill campuses.
