About Keio University

Keio University is a private university in Tokyo founded in 1858 by Fukuzawa Yukichi as a school of Western learning. It grew from that academy into a comprehensive private university with campuses at Mita, Hiyoshi, Shinanomachi, Yagami, and Shonan Fujisawa. It remains a private house of learning rather than a former imperial university.

Faculties and graduate schools include letters, economics, law, business and commerce, medicine, science and technology, policy management, environment and information studies, nursing, and pharmacy. Keio University Hospital at Shinanomachi anchors clinical training. Science and engineering are based at Yagami; policy and information studies at the Shonan Fujisawa Campus.

About 33,000 students enroll, with several thousand in graduate schools and a modest international share. Faculty, including hospital staff, number in the thousands. Alumni include Prime Ministers Junichiro Koizumi and Ryutaro Hashimoto and a long line of Japanese corporate executives.

The university is known for master's and doctoral degrees across those faculties, plus professional programs in business, law, and medicine. Training is faculty-supervised, with coursework and a thesis, on a two-semester calendar. Assistantships and fellowships support some research students. Graduate life is urban Tokyo, split among central Mita, the medical campus, and Shonan Fujisawa.

In the Grad School Navigator directory, Keio University lists 2 graduate programs in computer science and economics, all of them master's programs. Keio University holds rank 275 in the GSN Overall University Ranking.
