About Nagoya University
Nagoya University is a Japanese national university in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture. It was established in 1939 as Nagoya Imperial University, one of Japan's former imperial universities, with medical and other roots in the late nineteenth century. It is a comprehensive research university organized by schools and graduate schools rather than a collegiate system. The main Higashiyama campus lies in the eastern part of the city.
Undergraduate and graduate schools cover humanities, education, law, economics, informatics, science, medicine, engineering, and agricultural sciences. Institutes that matter for graduate students include the Kobayashi-Maskawa Institute for the Origin of Particles and the Universe and the Institute of Transformative Bio-Molecules, together with the university hospital. Physics, chemistry, engineering, and medicine are the fields most associated with the campus.
Enrollment is about 16,000 students, with a large graduate share of several thousand and international students numbering in the low thousands, many from East and Southeast Asia. Faculty number about 2,000 including the medical school. Nobel laureates associated with Nagoya include physicists Isamu Akasaki and Hiroshi Amano and chemist Ryoji Noyori.
Graduate study is by master's and doctoral degrees, with English-taught programs in some science and engineering fields. Science and engineering doctorates follow a supervisor and laboratory model. The academic year begins in April. MEXT scholarships and university fellowships are the main support for many international doctoral students. Nagoya is a large industrial city, and students live in neighborhoods around Higashiyama and the subway.
