About Tohoku University
Tohoku University is a national research university in Sendai, Japan, founded in 1907 as Tohoku Imperial University, the third imperial university after Tokyo and Kyoto. It was the first university in Japan to admit women, in 1913. Its Katahira, Kawauchi, Aobayama, and Seiryo campuses are spread across Sendai, the principal city of the Tohoku region on northern Honshu.
The university has 10 undergraduate faculties and a parallel set of graduate schools, together with attached research institutes. It is known for materials science, physics, engineering, chemistry, and medicine. Graduate students use the Institute for Materials Research, the Research Institute of Electrical Communication, the International Research Institute of Disaster Science, and Tohoku University Hospital. Disaster science became a lasting research focus after the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake.
Enrollment is about 18,000 students, of whom roughly one-third are graduate students. Several thousand international students, many from China, South Korea, and Southeast Asia, study on the campuses. Faculty number about 3,000. Alumni include chemist and Nobel laureate Koichi Tanaka and physicist Sumio Iijima, known for work on carbon nanotubes.
Graduate study follows Japan's master's and doctoral structure, with laboratory-based supervision in the sciences and engineering and a thesis plus coursework in other fields. Some degree programs are taught in English. The academic year begins in April. Sendai is a mid-sized regional capital with a large student population, tree-lined avenues, and access to mountains and the Pacific coast.
