About Tokyo Institute of Technology
Tokyo Institute of Technology was a national science and engineering university in Tokyo, founded in 1881 as the Tokyo Vocational School and reconstituted as Tokyo Institute of Technology in 1929. Instruction was based at Ookayama in Meguro, with further campuses at Suzukakedai in Yokohama and Tamachi in Minato. On 1 October 2024 it merged with Tokyo Medical and Dental University to form Institute of Science Tokyo, which kept the former Tokyo Tech sites as its science and engineering core.
Academic work was organized in six schools covering science, engineering, materials and chemical technology, computing, life science and technology, and environment and society, plus the Institute of Innovative Research. Graduate strengths included chemistry, materials, electrical and mechanical engineering, and computer science. The Earth-Life Science Institute on the Ookayama campus was a principal research home for doctoral students in earth and life sciences.
The institute enrolled about 10,000 students, roughly half of them in master's and doctoral courses, and a large share of those graduates came from outside Japan. Faculty numbered about 1,200. Associated scientists include Hideki Shirakawa, Nobel laureate in chemistry in 2000, and Yoshinori Ohsumi, Nobel laureate in physiology or medicine in 2016. Alumni include Nintendo executive Satoru Iwata.
Graduate study followed the Japanese two-year master's and three-year doctorate, with laboratory supervision from the first year. The academic year runs from April to March. Support typically came from MEXT scholarships, Japan Society for the Promotion of Science fellowships, and research assistantships. Students work on the Ookayama lab campus and live across inner Tokyo and the Tama corridor.
In the Grad School Navigator directory, Tokyo Institute of Technology lists 2 graduate programs in computer science, all of them master's programs.
