About 16,500 students are enrolled, including several thousand at graduate level. More than 2,000 international students come from over 100 countries. Faculty number about 1,800. Nobel laureate chemist Hideki Shirakawa taught here, and Nobel laureate physicist Leo Esaki served as president. Alumni include scientists, Olympic athletes trained in sport science, and public officials.

Master's and doctoral courses are the standard path, with some English-taught science and engineering programs. STEM training is laboratory-based. The academic year starts in April, with an October intake for some programs. MEXT and university scholarships and research assistantships support many doctoral students.
