About Waseda University
Waseda University is a private research university in Shinjuku, Tokyo, founded in 1882 by statesman Okuma Shigenobu as Tokyo Senmon Gakko and renamed Waseda in 1902. It grew into one of Japan's largest private universities, organized around undergraduate faculties and a separate cluster of graduate schools, with a main campus at Waseda and science and engineering facilities at Nishiwaseda and other Tokyo sites.
Faculties and graduate schools span political science and economics, law, letters, commerce, education, social sciences, science and engineering, and international studies. It is especially associated with political science, literature, and engineering. Graduate students use the Waseda Institute for Advanced Study, affiliated institutes in information technology and nanotechnology, and science facilities on the engineering campuses.
Enrollment is about 47,000 students, including several thousand international students from China, Korea, Southeast Asia, and elsewhere. Graduate enrollment is large by Japanese private-university standards. Alumni include novelist Haruki Murakami, former Taiwan president Lee Teng-hui, and several Japanese prime ministers, among them Yoshihiko Noda.
Graduate study is offered through specialized graduate schools leading to master's and doctoral degrees, with professional programs in business, finance, and law. The academic year begins in April, with a growing September intake for international programs. Scholarships include Japanese government awards and Waseda's own tuition reductions. Students live in northwest Tokyo around Takadanobaba and Waseda stations, a dense district of boarding houses, libraries, and the university's Okuma Auditorium.
In the Grad School Navigator directory, Waseda University lists 2 graduate programs in computer science and electrical & computer engineering, all of them master's programs. Waseda University holds rank 271 in the GSN Overall University Ranking.
