About University of Macau

The University of Macau is the public flagship university of the Macao Special Administrative Region. It opened in 1981 as the University of East Asia and took its present name in 1991. In 2014 it moved from Taipa to a purpose-built campus on Hengqin Island, on land in Guangdong under Macao jurisdiction. Its defining features are a residential college system and a trilingual setting of Chinese, Portuguese, and English.

Faculties include Arts and Humanities, Business Administration, Education, Health Sciences, Law, Science and Technology, and Social Sciences, with institutes of Chinese Medical Sciences and of Applied Physics and Materials Engineering. Graduate strengths include Chinese law and Portuguese-related legal studies, microelectronics and materials, Chinese medicine, and business. Laboratories and the Chinese medical sciences institute are the main research homes for doctoral students.

Enrollment is about 12,000 students, with a rising graduate share and a large intake from mainland China alongside local Macao students and a smaller overseas group. Faculty are recruited from Greater China, Portugal, and elsewhere. Alumni include civil servants, lawyers, and business figures in Macao; the graduate alumni base has expanded quickly since the Hengqin move.

Graduate degrees include taught master’s, research master’s, and PhD programs across the faculties, with law and science and technology especially active. PhD work is supervisor-led; taught master’s follow a coursework-plus-dissertation pattern. The calendar is a two-semester year. Research students are often supported by university assistantships and Macao science and technology funds. Students live in residential colleges on the Hengqin campus, a gated site linked by bridge to Taipa and the rest of the city.

In the Grad School Navigator directory, University of Macau lists 14 graduate programs across 10 subjects: 7 master's programs and 7 doctoral programs, with the widest choice in education, electrical engineering and languages & linguistics.
