About Maastricht University

Maastricht University is a public research university in Maastricht, in the southern Netherlands, founded in 1976. It is among the youngest Dutch research universities and was organized around problem-based learning rather than a medieval faculty structure. The city sits on the Belgian and German borders, which shaped an English-language and European orientation from the start.

Faculties include Health, Medicine and Life Sciences, with Maastricht University Medical Center; Law; Arts and Social Sciences; Science and Engineering; Psychology and Neuroscience; and the School of Business and Economics. Graduate strengths include medicine and health, European and international law, economics, psychology, and sustainability. Brightlands campuses in Limburg host public-private laboratories in materials, health, and data.

The university enrolls about 22,000 students, more than half of them from outside the Netherlands, representing well over 100 countries. Master's and doctoral students form a large share of that total. Academic staff number about 2,000. Alumni include Dutch public officials, physicians, and staff of European Union institutions who trained in the English-taught master's programs.

One-year and two-year master's degrees, many taught in English, and PhDs through faculty graduate schools are the main routes. Problem-based tutorials and a faculty employment contract for PhD candidates define the model. The calendar follows Dutch semesters. Doctoral candidates are typically university employees. Graduate life is compact and urban, in a small border city on the Maas.

In the Grad School Navigator directory, Maastricht University lists 7 graduate programs across 7 subjects: 5 master's programs and 2 doctoral programs, with the widest choice in health & medical sciences, law and materials science & engineering. Maastricht University holds rank 111 in the GSN Overall University Ranking.
