About Radboud University

Radboud University is a public research university in Nijmegen, in the eastern Netherlands. It opened in 1923 as the Catholic University of Nijmegen and took its present name in 2004 from Saint Radboud, an early medieval bishop of Utrecht. It grew from a confessional foundation into a broad research university while remaining on a single Heyendaal campus next to the university medical center.

Seven faculties cover philosophy, theology and religious studies; arts; law; social sciences; science; medical sciences; and management. The university is known for neuroscience and cognition, high-field physics, linguistics, and medicine. Graduate students work at the Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour, Radboud university medical center, and the HFML-FELIX high-field magnet and infrared free-electron laser laboratory; the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics sits on the same campus.

Enrollment is about 24,000 students, including several thousand master's and doctoral candidates, with international students making up more than a tenth of the student body and coming from around 100 countries. Academic staff number about 3,000, including medical faculty. Alumni include former Dutch prime minister Dries van Agt and figures in Dutch law, medicine, and public administration.

Master's degrees are two-year or one-year Bologna programs, many taught in English, leading to MSc, MA, or LLM, with PhD research after a master's, often on a salaried contract. Supervision is by a doctoral thesis committee in the Dutch model. The year is two semesters. Research funding includes NWO grants, Radboud scholarships for master's students, and medical-center posts. Nijmegen is a compact border city; graduate housing and labs are concentrated at Heyendaal, near the Waal river.

In the Grad School Navigator directory, Radboud University lists 10 graduate programs across 7 subjects: 9 master's programs and 1 doctoral program, with the widest choice in languages & linguistics, physics and biology. Radboud University holds rank 234 in the GSN Overall University Ranking.
