Saxion University of Applied Sciences

Saxion University of Applied Sciences is a Dutch hogeschool with campuses in Enschede, Deventer and Apeldoorn. It was formed in 1998 by merger of regional colleges of applied sciences in Overijssel and Gelderland, with roots in older technical, teacher-training and hospital schools. It is an applied-sciences institution, not a Dutch research university, and its defining structure is professional bachelor's and master's education tied to regional industry.

Teaching is grouped in schools of living environment, engineering, business, health, hospitality and creative technology, among others. Applied research is organized through lectorates that work with companies in Twente and the IJssel region. English-taught programs, especially in Enschede, draw students who want practice-oriented study beside the University of Twente.

Saxion enrolls about 27,000 students, including several thousand international students from more than 80 countries. Most students are undergraduates; the master's population is smaller. Staff are lecturers and professors of applied sciences rather than a large body of research chairs. Alumni work in Dutch engineering firms, healthcare, hospitality and public administration.

Graduate study is mainly professional master's degrees with taught modules, internships and an applied project rather than a PhD. The academic year begins in September and follows the Dutch hogeschool calendar of blocks and internships. Scholarships for non-EU students exist but are limited; many students combine study with part-time work. Enschede is a medium-sized city on the German border, with Deventer and Apeldoorn as smaller campus towns.
