About Tinbergen Institute
Tinbergen Institute is a graduate school and research institute in economics, econometrics, and finance, founded in 1987 and named for Dutch economist Jan Tinbergen. It is a joint institute of the University of Amsterdam, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, and Erasmus University Rotterdam, with sites in Amsterdam and Rotterdam rather than a standalone comprehensive university.
Academic work is organized in those three fields, with faculty appointed at the three parent universities. The institute's identity is the research master's and the doctoral pipeline in quantitative economics, not a full set of professional schools.
Intake is small, typically a few dozen MPhil students a year, and a high share are international. Faculty come from the three Dutch economics departments. Jan Tinbergen shared the first Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences in 1969.
The main taught degree is a two-year MPhil with intensive coursework in economic theory, econometrics, and finance, after which students continue to a PhD at a parent university under institute supervision. The calendar follows the Dutch academic year. Students work in Amsterdam, and some finance and economics tracks use Rotterdam, in a graduate-school setting without a large undergraduate campus.
In the Grad School Navigator directory, Tinbergen Institute lists 1 master's program, in economics.
