About University of Amsterdam

The University of Amsterdam is a public research university in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. It traces its origin to the Athenaeum Illustre, founded in 1632, and gained full university status in the nineteenth century. It is a large civic university spread across the historic center, the Roeterseiland campus, Amsterdam Science Park, and the Amsterdam University Medical Centers, not a single gated campus.

Seven faculties cover humanities, social and behavioural sciences, economics and business, law, science, medicine, and dentistry. Science graduate students work at Science Park and affiliated institutes; medical researchers train at Amsterdam UMC. The university jointly runs Amsterdam University College with Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Fields that draw graduate applicants include economics, communication, psychology, law, physics, and the life sciences.

About 40,000 students are enrolled, including a large master's population and several thousand Ph.D. candidates. International students, especially in taught master's programs, come from more than 100 countries and form a sizable share of graduate enrollment. Academic staff number in the thousands. Chemist Jacobus van 't Hoff, a Nobel laureate, taught at the university.

Taught master's degrees are one- or two-year MSc and MA programs under the Bologna structure. Ph.D. candidates are often employed as researchers and are supervised by a doctoral committee rather than a long coursework sequence. The academic year starts in September. Graduate life is urban: libraries, labs, and housing are mixed through the city, and cycling between sites is ordinary.
