About University of Twente
The University of Twente is a public technical university in Enschede, in the eastern Netherlands. It was founded in 1961 as Technische Hogeschool Twente to train engineers for the region's industry. It is one of the few Dutch universities built as a residential campus, with student housing on a wooded site between Enschede and Hengelo.
Education is organized in engineering, science, and behavioral, management, and social sciences faculties. Graduate research is tied to the MESA+ Institute for Nanotechnology, the TechMed Centre, and the ITC Faculty of Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation. The university emphasizes the combination of technology with social science and a high rate of company spin-offs in the adjacent Kennispark.
Enrollment is about 12,000 students, with international students often more than a third of master's cohorts and drawn from more than 80 countries. The faculty numbers several hundred. Alumni are concentrated in Dutch high-tech firms, public engineering, and campus startups.
The standard graduate awards are two-year English-taught MSc degrees, the Engineering Doctorate (EngD) for design-oriented work, and a four-year PhD in which candidates are typically employed by the university. The academic year follows the Dutch calendar from September. Campus housing, sports facilities, and laboratories sit together, so many graduate students live and work on the Enschede campus.
In the Grad School Navigator directory, University of Twente lists 7 graduate programs across 7 subjects, all of them master's programs, with the widest choice in communication, media & journalism, computer science and electrical engineering. University of Twente holds rank 214 in the GSN Overall University Ranking.
