About Norwegian University of Science and Technology
The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) is Norway's principal technical university, headquartered in Trondheim. It was formed in 1996 by merging the Norwegian Institute of Technology (NTH, founded 1910), the College of Arts and Sciences, and the Museum of Natural History and Archaeology. NTH's engineering identity still defines the university. Most teaching sits in Trondheim, with additional campuses in Gjovik and Alesund after later mergers.
Faculties cover engineering, natural sciences, information technology, architecture, medicine and health, economics, and humanities. Graduate work is strongest in energy, marine technology, petroleum, ICT, materials, and medical technology. Students use laboratories at Gloshaugen, the main engineering hill, and collaborate with SINTEF, the research organization that grew out of NTH. St. Olavs Hospital partners with the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences.
NTNU is Norway's largest university, with about 42,000 students and several thousand academic staff. A high share of master's and doctoral students come from outside Norway and from many countries. Alumni include Nobel chemist Lars Onsager and Nobel physicist Ivar Giaever.
Master's degrees are two-year Bologna programs, including the siv.ing. engineering route; PhDs last about three years of supervised research with limited coursework. Doctoral candidates are usually hired as research fellows. Semesters run from August to December and January to June. Graduate life is concentrated in Trondheim around Gloshaugen, with some programs in Gjovik and Alesund.
In the Grad School Navigator directory, Norwegian University of Science and Technology lists 6 graduate programs across 4 subjects, all of them master's programs, with the widest choice in biology, electrical & computer engineering and mathematics. Norwegian University of Science and Technology holds rank 199 in the GSN Overall University Ranking.
