About The Oslo School of Architecture and Design

The Oslo School of Architecture and Design (Arkitektur- og designhogskolen i Oslo) is a public specialist university college in Oslo, Norway, founded in 1945. It occupies converted industrial buildings at Vulkan on the Akerselva, in inner-city Oslo, rather than a suburban campus. Its defining structure is a single-field school of architecture, design, landscape architecture, and urbanism.

Teaching is organized through institutes of architecture, design, and urbanism and landscape. Graduate students work in design studios, workshops, and research units rather than in a wide set of faculties. The school is known in the Nordic countries for architecture, industrial design, and interaction design.

Enrollment is small, about 700 students, with most on master's programs and a smaller doctoral cohort. International students form a visible share of the master's intake, mainly from Europe and beyond. Faculty are academic architects and designers with active practices. Alumni include architects and designers in Norwegian and international firms; Sverre Fehn taught in this Oslo architecture milieu.

The main graduate awards are two-year master's degrees and a PhD in architecture and design. Master's study is studio-based, with critiques and a diploma project; the doctorate is by research. The year follows the Norwegian semester calendar. Students live in Oslo, where housing is costly, and use tram and bus from Vulkan to the rest of the city.

In the Grad School Navigator directory, The Oslo School of Architecture and Design lists 2 graduate programs in architecture and environmental design, all of them master's programs.
