About Chalmers University of Technology

Chalmers University of Technology is a foundation-governed technical university in Gothenburg, Sweden. It was founded in 1829 through a bequest from William Chalmers and has remained an engineering, technology, and architecture institution rather than a comprehensive university. Teaching takes place at the Johanneberg campus and at Lindholmen on the harbor.

Departments cover architecture and civil engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, physics, chemistry and chemical engineering, industrial and materials science, mechanics and maritime sciences, technology management, and life sciences. Graduate strengths include energy, materials, information technology, automotive and transport engineering, and maritime studies, with collaboration with Gothenburg industry. Research and competence centers operate on both campuses.

About 10,000 to 11,000 students are enrolled, a high share of them in master's and doctoral programs. International students make up a large part of English-taught master's cohorts and come from many countries. Faculty and doctoral students staff the departments. Alumni include physicist Gustaf Dalen, who received a Nobel Prize in Physics, and many engineers in Swedish vehicle, shipping, and energy firms.

Master's study is typically a two-year MSc taught in English. Doctoral education is a salaried appointment in a research group. The year has two semesters. Graduate life is urban Gothenburg, with trams between Johanneberg and Lindholmen and student housing in the city.
