About Karolinska Institutet
Karolinska Institutet is a medical university in Stockholm, Sweden, founded in 1810 by King Karl XIII to train army surgeons. It grew into Sweden's main center for medical education and biomedical research while remaining a specialist health-science institute rather than a comprehensive university. Work is split between Solna, beside Karolinska University Hospital, and Flemingsberg in the south. The Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet awards the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
Departments cover medicine, biomedicine, public health, neuroscience, oncology, and epidemiology. Graduate students work with Karolinska University Hospital and SciLifeLab, a national molecular life-science infrastructure. Master's programs include biomedicine, public health, toxicology, and health informatics; doctoral projects sit in hospital-linked research groups.
About 6,000 students follow undergraduate and master's programs and about 2,000 are doctoral students. International candidates form a large share of the PhD community and come from many countries. Faculty include hundreds of principal investigators. Associated scientists include Nobel laureates Sune Bergstrom and Bengt Samuelsson and neuroscientist Torsten Wiesel.
Study combines two-year master's degrees with a four-year doctoral education based on a supervised thesis and courses in method and ethics. Doctoral students are usually employed. The calendar uses autumn and spring semesters. Daily work sits in Solna's hospital cluster or Flemingsberg's science district, linked to central Stockholm by metro and commuter rail.
In the Grad School Navigator directory, Karolinska Institutet lists 6 graduate programs across 5 subjects: 4 master's programs and 1 doctoral program, with the widest choice in public health, biology and business & management.
