About Linnaeus University
Linnaeus University is a public university in Sweden with campuses in Växjö and Kalmar in Småland. It was created in 2010 by merging Växjö University and the University of Kalmar and takes its name from Carl Linnaeus, born in the region. Växjö became a university in 1999 after a university-college phase from 1977; Kalmar had university-college status from the same year. The defining fact is the dual campus: inland Växjö and coastal Kalmar.
Academic work sits in five faculties: Arts and Humanities, Health and Life Sciences, Social Sciences, Technology, and the School of Business and Economics. Graduate strengths include ecology and forestry, e-health, social sustainability, design, and environmental science linked to the Kalmar coast. Research is grouped in Linnaeus Knowledge Environments and in centers for ecology, eHealth, and intermedial studies.
Enrolment is about 40,000 when distance students are included, with a smaller on-campus body in Växjö and Kalmar. Master's programs are a large share of taught study. Staff number about 2,000. International students on English-taught degrees come from more than 50 countries. Alumni typically enter Swedish education, public service, and regional industry.
Graduate study centers on two-year master's degrees, including joint European programs, and doctoral training in faculty research schools. Supervision uses a principal supervisor and an individual study plan. The year runs in two semesters. Doctoral candidates are usually employed. Daily life is split between the lakeside Växjö campus and Kalmar's waterfront university quarter.
