About Lund University

Lund University is a public research university in Lund, in southern Sweden. It was founded in 1666, after Scania passed from Denmark to Sweden, and remains a comprehensive university in a compact medieval town. It grew from a classical faculty structure into eight faculties, with a large engineering faculty (LTH) added in the twentieth century.

Faculties include medicine, engineering, science, humanities and theology, law, social sciences, economics and management, and fine and performing arts. The university hospital, the MAX IV synchrotron laboratory, and the nearby European Spallation Source are the large research infrastructures used by graduate students in physics, chemistry, and the life sciences.

Enrollment is about 40,000 students, including a substantial body of international master's students taught in English, from many countries. Faculty number several thousand. Alumni include Tetra Pak founder Ruben Rausing and others in Swedish science, industry, and public administration.

Graduate education follows the Bologna model: one- and two-year master's degrees and the doctorate with a supervisor and public defense. Engineering and science doctorates are typically salaried doctoral-student posts. The academic year is two semesters. Lund is a bicycle-scale university town near Malmö and Copenhagen, and graduate students live in town or in neighboring villages on the Scanian plain.

In the Grad School Navigator directory, Lund University lists 16 graduate programs across 7 subjects, all of them master's programs, with the widest choice in biology, business & management and communication, media & journalism. Lund University holds rank 101 in the GSN Overall University Ranking.
