About Stockholm School of Economics

The Stockholm School of Economics is a private business school in Stockholm, Sweden, founded in 1909 by Swedish industry to educate economists and managers. It is an independent school rather than a faculty of a comprehensive university. The main campus stands on Sveavagen in central Stockholm.

Teaching and research concentrate on economics, finance, accounting, management, and marketing. Graduate students work in MSc tracks in those fields and in PhD programs in economics and business administration, with associated research institutes in financial economics, retailing, and related areas.

Enrollment is about 1,800 students across bachelor, master, and doctoral levels. Master's cohorts are strongly international, with students from many countries. Faculty include research economists and business scholars; Bertil Ohlin, later a Nobel laureate in economics, taught at the school. Alumni include Swedish political and business leaders such as former prime minister Magdalena Andersson.

The degrees most associated with graduate study are two-year MSc programs, the PhD, and an executive MBA. Master's work is coursework plus a thesis; doctoral work is supervised research. Instruction at graduate level is largely in English, on an autumn and spring term calendar. Scholarships are used to recruit international master's students. Daily life is in central Stockholm, close to banks, ministries, and corporate headquarters.
