About Stockholm University
Stockholm University is a public research university in Sweden's capital. It began in 1878 as Stockholms högskola, a civic college meant to open higher education in the city, and received full university status in 1960. It is a comprehensive university with a main campus at Frescati, in the Royal National City Park north of the city center, rather than a collegiate or technical-institute structure.
Four faculties organize teaching and research: Humanities, Law, Social Sciences, and Science. The university is known for environmental and climate science, astronomy and physics, political science, law, and the humanities. Graduate students use the Bolin Centre for Climate Research, the Stockholm Resilience Centre, the Arrhenius Laboratory, and AlbaNova University Center, a physics and astronomy complex shared with KTH Royal Institute of Technology.
About 30,000 students are enrolled, including around 1,700 doctoral candidates, with international students from more than 100 countries in English-language master's programs. Past faculty include chemist Svante Arrhenius, a Nobel laureate. Alumni include Olof Palme, Ingmar Bergman, and Tomas Tranströmer.
Graduate study is organized as two-year master's degrees and some one-year programs, and as PhD training of about four years, combining courses with a supervised thesis. The academic year is an autumn and a spring semester. Doctoral candidates are often employed by the university. Swedish and university scholarships support some master's students; PhD posts carry a salary. Frescati is a park campus with metro access to central Stockholm, so graduate life mixes laboratory and library work with the city.
In the Grad School Navigator directory, Stockholm University lists 10 graduate programs across 6 subjects: 7 master's programs and 3 doctoral programs, with the widest choice in environment, climate & sustainability, biology and economics. Stockholm University holds rank 138 in the GSN Overall University Ranking.
