About University of Gothenburg
The University of Gothenburg is a public university in Gothenburg, on Sweden's west coast. It was founded in 1891 as Goteborgs hogskola and received university status in 1954. It is a comprehensive civic university spread across the city rather than a single enclosed campus, with major sites around Vasaparken, Haga, Lindholmen, and the medical precinct at Sahlgrenska.
Eight faculties cover the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, education, fine and applied arts, information technology, business, economics and law, and the Sahlgrenska Academy for medicine, dentistry, and health sciences. Graduate research is associated with medicine and public health at Sahlgrenska University Hospital, marine science, education, linguistics, and design. Some science and engineering activity overlaps geographically with Chalmers University of Technology, a separate institution in the same city.
About 50,000 students are enrolled, including large master's cohorts and several thousand doctoral candidates. International students are a substantial share of master's programs. Faculty number several thousand. Pharmacologist Arvid Carlsson, a Nobel laureate in Physiology or Medicine, spent his research career here. Alumni include film director Ruben Ostlund and former European commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom.
Graduate education follows the Bologna structure of one- and two-year master's degrees and a four-year doctoral education that combines courses with a thesis. A principal supervisor leads each doctoral project. The academic year has two semesters from late August. Doctoral candidates are often employed on salaried university contracts, the usual Swedish funding model. Gothenburg is a port city of about 600,000, with student housing spread through ordinary neighborhoods.
In the Grad School Navigator directory, University of Gothenburg lists 3 graduate programs across 3 subjects, all of them master's programs, with the widest choice in electrical engineering, mathematics and physics. University of Gothenburg holds rank 160 in the GSN Overall University Ranking.
