About Uppsala University

Uppsala University is a public research university in Uppsala, Sweden, and the oldest university in the Nordic countries. It was founded in 1477 and grew around the cathedral city, adding science, medicine, and later technology while remaining a comprehensive faculty university. Historic buildings in the town center sit beside newer laboratory campuses.

Disciplinary domains cover humanities and social sciences, medicine and pharmacy, and science and technology, including law and theology. Graduate research is strong in life sciences, physics, pharmacy, and the humanities. The Biomedical Centre, the Angstrom Laboratory, and Uppsala University Hospital are the principal facilities for those fields.

About 50,000 students are enrolled, including about 2,400 doctoral students. International students are a large share of master's and Ph.D. cohorts, from Europe and beyond. Eight Nobel laureates have been affiliated as students or faculty. Botanist Carl Linnaeus was a professor there; diplomat Dag Hammarskjold and chemist Svante Arrhenius were students.

Graduate study includes two-year master's degrees, many taught in English, and doctorates in which candidates are typically employed by the university. Supervision is chair-based rather than a heavy taught-course model. Uppsala is a small city about 70 kilometers north of Stockholm, so graduate students live in town, move between the historic center and the laboratory campuses, and use student nations for housing and social life.

In the Grad School Navigator directory, Uppsala University lists 22 graduate programs across 10 subjects: 20 master's programs and 1 doctoral program, with the widest choice in biology, physics and mathematics. Uppsala University holds rank 110 in the GSN Overall University Ranking.
