About Singapore Management Univerisity
Singapore Management University is a public autonomous university in Singapore, established by the government in 2000 as the country's third university. It occupies a city campus along Stamford Road and Victoria Street in the Bras Basah district rather than a suburban science park. It was designed as an American-style university focused on management, social sciences, computing and law, in contrast to the older comprehensive and technical universities.
The university has six schools: the Lee Kong Chian School of Business, the School of Accountancy, the School of Economics, the School of Computing and Information Systems, the Yong Pung How School of Law and the School of Social Sciences. Graduate work is concentrated in business, finance, analytics, computing, law and economics. Research institutes include centers in financial economics, applied computing and behavioral sciences. The founding partnership with the Wharton School shaped the business curriculum.
Enrollment is about 12,000 students, with several thousand postgraduates and a substantial share of international students, especially at master's level, from across Asia and beyond. Faculty number about 400. Alumni work in banking, consulting, the Singapore civil service and regional technology firms.
Graduate degrees include the MBA, specialized master's in finance, analytics and management, the Juris Doctor, and PhDs in business, economics, psychology, computing and related fields. Master's programs are taught and cohort-based; PhD study is research under a supervisor with coursework in the first years. The academic year is semesters, with some intensive terms. Scholarships, research assistantships and industry fellowships are common for research students. Students study in downtown Singapore, with internships in the nearby financial district.
