About Singapore Management University
Singapore Management University is a public university in downtown Singapore, established in 2000 as the country's third university. It is a specialist institution in management, social sciences, law, and computing, built on a city campus in the Bras Basah district. Seminar teaching and small classes, rather than a large lecture-hall model, are the defining structural fact.
Seven schools cover accountancy, business, economics, computing and information systems, law, social sciences, and integrative studies. Graduate work concentrates in finance, business analytics, law, economics, and computer science. Research homes include the Institute of Innovation and Entrepreneurship and school-based centers in financial economics and in computing.
Enrollment is about 12,000 students, with a growing graduate share. International students are a large part of master's and doctoral cohorts, drawn from Asia, Europe, and North America. Faculty number several hundred. Because the university is young, its alumni are concentrated in Singapore's public service, banks, law firms, and technology companies rather than in a long historical roster of famous names.
Graduate study includes professional master's degrees, research master's, and Ph.D. programs, with seminar coursework and close faculty supervision. Some degrees are offered jointly with overseas partners. Students live and intern in the civic and business district; the campus is walkable to courts, museums, and offices rather than set on a suburban greenfield.
In the Grad School Navigator directory, Singapore Management University lists 22 graduate programs across 9 subjects: 12 master's programs and 9 doctoral programs, with the widest choice in business & management, accounting and economics. Singapore Management University holds rank 437 in the GSN Overall University Ranking.
